Position Overview

A growing organization in Brooklyn is seeking an experienced and detail-oriented Director of Editing to lead and oversee the quality, consistency, and execution of written content across the organization.

The Director of Editing will manage the editorial process from initial draft through final approval, ensuring all materials are clear, accurate, professional, and aligned with established standards. This position is ideal for a strong editor and communicator who can manage multiple projects, provide thoughtful feedback, and maintain high editorial standards in a fast-paced environment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Oversee the organization's editing and editorial review process.
  • Review and edit written materials for clarity, grammar, spelling, structure, tone, consistency, and accuracy.
  • Ensure content meets established editorial and quality standards before publication or distribution.
  • Manage multiple editing projects, priorities, and deadlines simultaneously.
  • Provide clear and constructive feedback to writers and other team members.
  • Develop and maintain editorial guidelines, style standards, and best practices.
  • Ensure consistency in voice, terminology, formatting, and messaging across materials.
  • Collaborate with writers, designers, marketing teams, and other departments as needed.
  • Review final proofs and approve content before release.
  • Identify opportunities to improve editorial workflows and increase efficiency.
  • Maintain organized records of drafts, revisions, approvals, and final materials.
  • Help establish processes for quality control and accuracy.
  • Manage or mentor additional editorial staff as the department grows.
  • Stay current on editorial standards, content trends, and relevant tools and technology.
Qualifications
  • Previous professional experience in editing, publishing, content development, communications, or a related field.
  • Strong editing and proofreading skills.
  • Exceptional command of grammar, spelling, punctuation, and written English.
  • Excellent attention to detail and commitment to accuracy.
  • Experience managing content from initial draft through final approval.
  • Strong organizational and project-management abilities.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines simultaneously.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to provide constructive editorial feedback and work collaboratively with writers and other team members.
  • Strong judgment regarding tone, structure, clarity, and audience.
  • Comfortable taking ownership of projects and making editorial decisions.
  • Experience supervising or leading an editorial team is preferred.
