Position Overview

A Brooklyn nonprofit organization that provides free skills training to adults preparing for careers in the trades is seeking an experienced Interior House Painting Instructor to lead a short-term, hands-on training program.

The instructor will teach adult beginners the fundamentals of professional interior painting, combining demonstrations with supervised hands-on practice. The goal is to help students develop practical skills, understand job-site expectations, and prepare for paid work in the painting and home improvement trades.

Key Responsibilities
  • Teach the fundamentals of interior residential painting to adult learners.
  • Demonstrate proper surface preparation techniques.
  • Teach patching, sanding, taping, and other preparation methods.
  • Demonstrate proper cutting-in and rolling techniques.
  • Introduce students to basic paint spraying techniques.
  • Teach proper setup, breakdown, and cleanup procedures.
  • Explain the appropriate use and care of painting tools, equipment, and materials.
  • Cover essential job-site safety procedures, including lead-safe practices.
  • Demonstrate techniques for completing painting projects efficiently while maintaining professional-quality standards.
  • Supervise students during hands-on practice.
  • Provide real-time instruction, corrections, and constructive feedback.
  • Answer questions and explain techniques in a clear and patient manner.
  • Help students understand professional expectations and proper job-site conduct.
Qualifications
  • Must be a licensed painting or home improvement contractor OR currently work under a licensed contractor.
  • Solid professional experience performing interior house painting.
  • Strong knowledge of surface preparation, patching, sanding, taping, cutting in, rolling, and basic spraying techniques.
  • Familiarity with painting tools, materials, job-site safety, and lead-safe practices.
  • Ability to demonstrate painting techniques in a hands-on classroom environment.
  • Ability to explain professional skills clearly and patiently to adult beginners.
  • Reliable, professional, and comfortable working directly with students on site.
  • Previous teaching, training, mentoring, or supervisory experience is a plus but not required.
